In the backyard of a dear friend's home in La Cañada Flintridge, I began doing something I would return to again and again. Building architecture from trussing. Black steel trusses framed the outdoor landscape, creating depth, shape and structure where there had been only open sky. Draped in white and dressed with trailing greenery and ivory florals, the frames became rooms without walls. Black tables, gold rimmed glassware and dense ivory rose centerpieces kept everything grounded and chic. The yard's natural landscaping became part of the design. Nothing competed. Everything belonged. This is what trussing taught me. Structure is its own form of beauty. With the right frame, any space becomes a world.
